Which large dents qualify
- Soft and shallow: the dent has rounded edges and no sharp center. These respond very well to PDR, even when they are big.
- Paint intact: no cracks, chips or flaking anywhere in the dent.
- Metal not stretched: a deep impact can thin the metal in the center. Stretched metal "oil-cans" (pops in and out) and needs shrinking.
- Steel or aluminum body panel: door, fender, quarter panel, hood, roof, trunk lid, tailgate. Not plastic bumpers.
How we repair a large dent
- Assess from photos. We ask for a photo straight on, one at an angle, and one with something for scale.
- Gain access. Remove the trim panel, liner or light that blocks the back of the dent. Everything goes back the same day.
- Glue pulling. For the center of a big dent we often start with glue tabs and a lifter from the outside, which raises most of the dent at once.
- Rod work. The rest is pushed up from behind in small steps, with high spots tapped down.
- Blend. The edges of the dent are worked last so the panel reads flat under the light board.
Cost and time
Large dents are quoted from photos. Deciding factors: size, depth, whether a bodyline is involved, and how much trim must come off. Typical time on site: 2–4 hours. Details on pricing.
PDR or body shop?
If the paint is intact, PDR keeps the factory finish and is done the same day. If the paint is broken or the metal is stretched, a body shop is the right call. We say which from your photos, free. See PDR vs body shop.
Large dent questions
How big a dent can PDR fix?
Size matters less than depth and paint condition. A soft dent the size of a dinner plate with intact paint is often easier than a small, sharp ding. Very deep dents, or dents with stretched metal, are the limit. Send a photo with something for scale, like a coin or a hand.
Is a large dent more expensive than a small one?
Usually yes, because it takes longer, but a large shallow dent can cost less than a small sharp crease. Price depends on size, depth, panel, access and whether the dent crosses a bodyline. See the pricing page.
What if the paint is cracked in the middle of the dent?
Then PDR alone will not give a clean result. We can push the metal out so a body shop has less to fill, or we recommend a full body shop repair. You hear this before booking, not after.
Can a dent on the roof or hood be fixed?
Yes. Hoods and roofs have good access from behind once the liner or trim is removed, and they are typical PDR panels. Hail work is the same technique on a smaller scale.
How long does a large dent take?
Typically 2–4 hours on site. Dents that need trim removal or glue pulling take the longer end.
