PDR vs Body Shop for a Dent

Paintless dent repair (PDR) reshapes the metal and keeps the factory paint; a body shop fills, sands and repaints the panel. For dents with intact paint, PDR is faster, usually cheaper and better for resale value. For cracked paint or stretched metal, the body shop is the right choice. GoDent does PDR across Orange County, CA.

When PDR is the right choice

  • Door dings, parking dents and creases with intact paint.
  • Hail damage. PDR is the industry standard for hail.
  • Leased cars before the return inspection.
  • Any car where keeping the factory finish matters: new cars, collector cars, cars with a pearl or three-stage paint that is hard to match.

When the body shop is the right choice

  • The paint is cracked, chipped through to metal, or scratched deeply.
  • The metal is stretched, torn or has a sharp crease on a panel edge.
  • The damage is on a plastic bumper cover.
  • The panel is so damaged that replacing it costs less than repairing it.
  • There is already filler under the paint from an old repair.

PDR vs body shop questions

Does PDR affect factory paint or resale value?

No. PDR never sands, fills or sprays, so the factory paint stays as it left the plant. A repainted panel can be detected with a paint-depth gauge and may lower a trade-in offer; a PDR repair leaves nothing to detect.

Is PDR cheaper than a body shop?

For a dent with intact paint, almost always. A body shop has to refinish the whole panel and often blend the next one. PDR works only on the dent itself: door dings from $80 with GoDent.

When should I go to a body shop instead?

When the paint is cracked, chipped or scratched through, when the metal is stretched or torn, when the damage is on a plastic bumper, or when a panel is so badly damaged that replacement is cheaper. We tell you from a photo if your dent is one of these.

Can PDR and a body shop be combined?

Yes. On a dent with a paint chip, PDR can bring the metal back to shape so the body shop only needs a touch-up instead of filler, which keeps most of the panel original.

Does insurance cover PDR?

Insurers accept PDR and often prefer it for hail because it is cheaper than repainting. Comprehensive coverage applies minus your deductible; single dents usually cost less than the deductible.
