Can PDR fix a crease?

Yes, when three things are true:

  • Paint is intact. No cracks along the crease line. Cracked paint will flake when the metal moves.
  • Metal is not stretched. A sharp, deep crease can stretch the steel. Stretched metal cannot go back to its original shape without heat shrinking and refinishing.
  • The crease is reachable from behind. Most doors, fenders and quarter panels are. Double-skinned areas and panel edges are harder.

Honest limits: a crease on a door edge, a crease that crosses a seam, or a crease on a stretched area may end up 80–90% better instead of invisible. We tell you from the photo which case yours is.

How a crease repair works

  1. Map the line. Under the light board we mark the low line and the raised ridges on both sides of it.
  2. Relieve the ridges. The metal pushed up next to the crease is tapped down first, so the crease can rise.
  3. Raise the crease. Working along the line in small steps, we push the metal up from behind, or glue-pull it from the front where there is no access.
  4. Rebuild the bodyline. If the crease crosses a styling line, the line is reshaped last.
  5. Final check. Straight reflections across the whole area.

Cost and time

Creases are priced from photos. Length, depth, sharpness and location on the panel decide the price. Short creases fall near the door ding range; long creases across a bodyline cost more. Typical time: 1–3 hours.

When a body shop is the better choice

If the paint is already cracked, or the crease has stretched the metal badly, a body shop repair with filler and paint is the honest recommendation. See PDR vs body shop.

Crease dent questions

Can a crease be fixed with paintless dent repair?

Most creases can, as long as the paint is intact and the metal is not stretched. A crease is harder than a round ding because the metal is sharply folded along a line, so it takes more time and more passes. A recent example: a crease on a Cadillac Lyriq front fender was $680.

Which creases cannot be fixed?

Creases that run over a panel edge, creases with cracked paint, and very sharp creases where the metal has stretched or thinned. In those cases PDR can improve the panel, but not make it perfect, and we say so before you book.

What is a bodyline dent?

A dent that crosses the styling line pressed into the panel, for example the crease along the side of a door. The line has to be rebuilt in the right place, which takes extra skill and time. PDR handles it well when the paint is intact.

How long does a crease repair take?

From about an hour for a short, shallow crease to three or more hours for a long one across a bodyline. You get the time estimate with the price.

Does the car need to go to a shop?

No. Crease repairs are done on site like any other PDR job: your driveway, your office lot or a garage, anywhere in Orange County.
